Recently I was hired to capture the second pilot of GEM projects.Gem project is the future of community work, combining mobile devices and rewards to help communities and causes. The concept is that Gem project will host events to help causes and NGO's and volunteers who attend these events can earn GEMs.Gems can be used to purchase airtime, pre-paid electricity, movie tickets and groceries.[http://gemproject.org]
For the GEM project pilot 2.0, we went out to the Net Hiv/Aids Youth Project, 30km to the south of Johannesburg in a squatter camp called Sweet Waters by Grasmere plaza. [http://www.nethivaids.org.za]
Through a mix of social media and word of mouth the event was shared with the local community and Suburban volunteers alike. It was exciting to watch as the volunteers showed up in numbers to help.
I was proud to see a great mix of cultures all working together to help a cause. Everyone smiling, interacting and getting their hands dirty.
Face painting, beading bracelets, and cupcake decorating was organized to entertain and bless the children on the day. I enjoyed watching the joy and love that children get when they participate in activities like these. Their inquisitive nature may be a handful, but it is an absolute blessing. A generous amount of donations were also given to Net Hiv/Aids Youth Project on the day, and many thanks to those who brought.
"Music knows no color.Dancing brings only joy."
The presence of music on the day brought great vibes and dance to everyone.
The day was a great success with 107 volunteers who attended, mixed between local community and suburbanites. A total of 10 700 GEMs were earned by volunteers and Net Hiv/Aids Youth Project received some much needed assistance.
Please go check out the website, download the app, and keep and eye out for future events where you can earn GEMs.
